Victim Representation

Criminal acts of violence can cause lasting trauma. Compensation is available to victims of crime in Ontario through a provincial board. In some cases, civil actions for damages may also be available, not only against the perpetrator but against others who failed to prevent the offence. Ontario has also opened the door to pursue historic civil sexual assault claims by eliminating the limitation period for bringing such claims.

Our advocacy for victims spans several practice areas. In the criminal courts, we represent complainants and witnesses wishing to protect their right to the privacy of their personal information (O’Connor and Mills applications). We represent victims before tribunals including the Criminal Injuries Compensation Board, the Ontario Human Rights Tribunal and professional discipline tribunals. We also bring civil actions for damages against perpetrators and institutional defendants.
