Victim Representation
Criminal acts of violence can cause lasting trauma. In some cases, civil actions for damages may be available, not only against the perpetrators but against custodians and institutions who failed to prevent the offence. Ontario has also opened the door to pursue historic civil sexual assault claims and civil claims for assaults against children by eliminating the limitation period for bringing such claims.
Our advocacy for victims spans several practice areas. In addition to bringing civil actions for damages against criminal perpetrators and institutional defendants, we represent complainants and witnesses in criminal cases seeking to protect their privacy from being encroached upon by the Crown or the accused (s. 276 and O’Connor and Mills applications). We also represent victims of sexual misconduct before the Ontario Human Rights Tribunal and professional discipline tribunals.
